BIG BOOST FOR TOWN’S YOUNG PEOPLE

Lorna Evans
Hartlepool is to benefit from lottery funding thanks to The Big Boost scheme for 16-25 year olds in the town.
The Big Boost programme will be awarding £5million nationally, putting young people at the centre of creating, planning and delivering projects in their area.
16-25 year olds with an idea that will benefit their community can apply for awards of up to £5000 to get their ideas off the ground. Awards are given by a committee made-up of other young people who have received awards.
Youngsters in other areas of the country have used the funding to provide a peer mentoring scheme, music and video projects, a youth magazine, an anti-racism film, a dance project, and an event to break down the barriers and stereotypes against young people.
Lorna Evans from The Big Boost is working to get young people involved and wants to hear their ideas, award winners will also obtain mentoring from Lorna.
Previously, Lorna has worked for MTV, SKY and launched Lara Croft Tomb Raider for Playstation.
She adds; “The Big Boost invests in young social entrepreneurs with vision, passion and drive who want to change the world for the better.”
“A lot of young people are told that their ideas don’t matter and are given negative responses, I will make sure that the voices of young people in Hartlepool are heard.”
The Big Boost is being brought to Hartlepool in partnership with New Deal for Communities (NDC) who is providing the office base for Lorna carry out her work.
Awards are provided to individuals or informal groups of up to three people from across Hartlepool. Awards are not for groups with constitutions or formal members.

Over the last eight months, New Deal for Communities, Hartlepool Revival and Community Campus have undertaken the renovation of two properties in Thornton Street, Hartlepool.
The refurbishments are now complete and in order to mark the occasion residents were invited to go along on the 30th of August and view the properties, speak to members of staff and chat to workers from the project.
Several young people have worked with construction tutors from the project to gain experience in a variety of trades and have helped to turn the two properties into modern spacious family homes. Hartlepool Councillor, Mr Ray Waller, gave a speech and presented each construction trainee with a certificate.
A very interesting display about Thornton Street had been created by local residents, showing historical information and old photographs.
Young people from the area who attended the event were invited to give their views on the Linear Park Design for Thornton Street. Refreshments were provided for all who attended and the younger children were invited to join in organised games.
A resident and her family will be moving into one of the properties shortly from a house on the opposite side of Thornton Street.

SOUNDS GOOD FOR HARTLEPOOL PRIMARY SCHOOLS

Two primary schools in Hartlepool are celebrating a new addition to their playgrounds in the form of sound sculptures.
Towering over the pupils at 10ft high, the base sound sculptures have been placed in Stranton and Lynnfield Primary Schools to add some music to their school day.
A flute fish placed on top of the sculpture acts like a weathercock and blows with the wind making various pan pipes sounds, the warmth of the wood adds to the power of the sculpture by creating soft musical tones.
Funded by the Hartlepool New Deal for Communities (NDC) Arts Project, the work was carried out by the Integrated Mental Health Service and Paddy Burton who helped create the sounds. Around 20 children from both schools were asked to produce pictures of sea creatures to be carved into the base of the sculptures.
The children’s illustrations were sent to Phil Swinburne and members of the I.M. Health Service who chose a selection of images then carved the designs into the wood. A professional sculptor also gave his own free time and energy to the project.
NDC Arts Facilitator Phil Swinburne said: “These sound sculptures have to be seen to be believed. The project has been created in partnership with both primary schools and has received support and assistance from a number of individuals and projects. I would like to thank everyone who has helped create these amazing features.”
For more information on the project please contact Phil Swinburne on 01429 523459.
